I found a fix for this problem. It happened to me yesterday. It's software, not hardware. Simply connect the Zune to your PC, open the Zune software (It usually automatically pops up), click Settings in the top right hand corner, then select Device. Erase all content on your Zune and it will reboot automatically. My pad started working as soon as I did this.

Remember, you can always copy everything from your Zune onto your PC library, so do that if you want to save anything.

Try sliding the "Lock" slider on top of your Zune back and forth, then try to reboot your Zune. I had the same problem, tried all of the above remedies and still had the problem. I then slid the switch to locked, then to unlocked, then pressed and held the back button and down arrow at the same time. Voila, it rebooted and has worked fine since.

Mine is an original 30 Gig model. And I hope your solution is as simple and cheap.

I'm in the same boat; my Zune was working fine in the car, I stopped by my office and when I came back to my car the pad was no longer working at all so I can't shut it down (hold back + up).

I updated the firmware a few days ago when the update was released so I'm not sure if the two are related so that's up to date...

I have a limited edition red 80 with an image and text engraved on the back so I'm hoping I don't have to get stuck having to have them repair it or swap it for a refurb since getting this kind of thing taken care of properly and getting the right unit back can be a nightmare when it disappears in to a repair center.

When hardware doesn't work and rebooting doesn't fix it the only other options are

1) Plug the Zune in and attempt to download the latest firmware or drivers.

2) Call tech support.

I would follow those steps in that order.

Not a problem.

First let's see what version of the firmware you are running:

1. On the Home screen on the Zune device, select settings, and then press the center of the Zune pad.
2. Select about, and then press the center of the Zune pad.
3. Select zune, and then press the center of the Zune pad.

The latest Zune firmware is 2.3 (1145). If you Zune says it is running any other version, then an update is going to help, at least in some way.

If it already says 2.3 (1145) then we may need to contact support now. But you can always try to update the firmware anyways.

Here is how:

1. Make sure that you have the current version of the Zune software installed on your computer. To do this, follow these steps:
If you are a new Zune customer, visit the following Web site and install the Zune software for your computer:
Zune.net | Download Zune Software (http://www.zune.net/setup)

If you already have an earlier version of the Zune software installed on your computer, update the software. To do this, click Settings, click software, click GENERAL, and then click CHECK FOR UPDATES
2. Connect the Zune device to your computer by using the Zune sync cable. Use a USB port on the back of the computer. Do not use a USB hub.
Note If the battery in the Zune device is critically low, we recommend that you charge your Zune device before you continue. For more information about how to charge your Zune device, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

927348 (How to charge the battery in your Zune device) How to charge the battery in your Zune device
3. Open the Zune software while the Zune device is still connected to your computer. The Zune software searches the Internet for the latest version of the firmware. If a newer version of the Zune firmware is available than the version that you have installed, a notice to update your device appears. You can also manually check for new device updates by clicking Settings, by clicking device, and then by clicking Device Update.

Important Do not move or disconnect the Zune device until the update is complete. The update may take several minutes. During this time, the Zune device may restart several times. Please be patient.

I hope this helps.
