Warning About File Sharing
The Record Industry Association of America (RIAA) recently won a lawsuit against a single mom in Minnesota who had file sharing software on her computer and was sharing music files. She was sued for 24 of the songs she was sharing and the RIAA won $222,000 from her in court.
Why am I telling you this? You or your children may be knowingly or unknowingly sharing music on the Internet that could put you at risk for the same type of lawsuit. Most of the files sharing programs are freely available on the Internet. When installed on your computer it will make your music available to the rest of the Internet community for sharing. Because you are not anonymous on the Internet the RIAA can contact your Internet service provider to get your name and address so they can file a lawsuit against you. You do not knowingly have to be sharing music or actually have anyone downloading the music from you. Just the mere making it available is grounds for a lawsuit and they will win.
If you have any of these programs on your computer, you have file sharing (peer-to-peer) software.
