Zune frozen on "loading" screen

I feared that I had done something to cause my Zune to malfunction this morning, but now I am relieved and frustrated at the same time that this is a widespread problem.  Microsoft better oblige Zune owners with repairs even if they are out of warranty.   But at the same time I smell a lawsuit if they do nothing.

Check out the link below.  It must have something to do with the latest firmware update Microsoft did.  I followed the instructions on this site to remove the battery and it worked.  I am now listening to my Zune again.  I have it plugged in and charging while listening to it.

A word of caution though...it's a bit of a pain in the @$$ to get the battery cable back in and when it's attached, you will see the battery icon large on your display.  Once you see that, put it back together and plug it in!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

same problem. 1st gen 30gb. letting the battery go flat and plugging it back in brings up the charging icon until it has enough charge to display the frozen zune screen

Another site people are saying the same thing...however, by doing so it voids any existing warranty for those of you who may still have one.  I may wait awhile to see if microsoft has a different solution that doesn't involve taking it apart.  Thanks for the information though.

I just called the Microsoft Zune Help Line, 1-877-GET-ZUNE (1-877-438-9863), and after attempting to follow the tech support prompts to no avail I requested an operator and got a recording telling me "Due to extreme weather conditions we are unable to answer your call". The tech support advice I was given by the IVR was to attempt to reboot by toggling the lock switch several times and then holding down the back and up buttons at the same time. Of course nothing changed, but the automated system couldn't seem to understand that so it attempted to route me to a human being. Evidently they are being flooded with calls right now. Best of luck to all my fellow Zune users.

My 30 GB zune is also 'frozen' on the zune load start up screen (noticed at 5:00 AM this morning) and shows the loading bar at 95%? Is there any one out there with a solution? Why are all the 30 GB zunes freezing up like this??

This so sucks. Amazing how we get so attached and dependant. So last night on my way home from work at 1am I was a happy listener. I did notice that when I plugged my Zune to the car, the clock had the wrong time on it which immediately corrected to the current time (then). I listened for the entire 45 minute drive home, disconnected as per usual and then it lay on my kitchen counter until i went to bed at 3:30am. It was at that moment it happpened. I placed it on the Zune Dock and it stayed black, I lifted it off and replaced it and it went to the reload screen, the loading bar began to thread and then it has just remained there since. It did run itself down to the low battery icon. I replaced it onto the dock and it is still frozen. Noway i am gonna tamper with this device until MS gets some statement out on what to do. They really must address this. Weird though. We are all "wired" together in our little lost community...Unhappy New Year...
