How long does it take the battery to die?
I've had NO problems with my Zune since Christmas and all of a sudden today it freezes on a radio station screen. I keep it hooked up to my computer all day long so the battery is always charged. Today was the first time I used the radio function with my headphones while I walked around the office...then I went to lunch, came back and tried to listen to my playlists (while not hooked to the computer) and the screen was frozen. Now my computer will not recognize it. I've tried resetting it, no luck.
I hate to wait for the battery to die...my Zune is always charged so it is most likely on a full battery. This really sucks.
Oh, now NOTHING shows up on the screen. I can't get it to do anything. Should I call MS??

OK, it took me a good 24 hours but I finally got mine worked out of this situation. The process of letting it die and then recharging it worked for me, but a very important step: I had to let it die, then keep trying to turn it on until the [ ! ] battery icon wouldn't come up AT ALL!!!!! I did this by manually pressing the play button until it stopped showing up, THEN I propped something on the play button (the leg of a small DVD rack) and let it sit there for around 15 minutes. I don't know if the latter is necessary to fix this, but I would definitely do it just in case.
The times when I just let the Zune die and immediately plugged it in, it had the same freezing error. This time, the charging screen turned off on its own within a minute, then I was able to turn it on and see the Zune logo! I don't know if everyone will get such immediate results, but I wouldn't wait more than a few minutes if I were you. Otherwise, you'll be waiting a long time to try again.
So, to put this in steps:
1. Let the Zune sit there until the frozen screen finally dies. 2. Push the power button until the [ ! ] icon will no longer even show up. 3. Hold the power button down (I suggest finding something to prop on it) for at least 15 minutes, just in case. Because this step may be very important, I advise you not to be impatient! You want to make sure the battery is absolutely completely dead. 4. I don't know if this is necessary, but I reinstalled the Zune software before I tried to plug it in, and waited for the software to ask me to plug it in. 5. In my case, the batter charging icon came on again, but disappeared in under a minute. Then, I was able to turn the Zune on. The logo appeared, then the menu. It said it was connecting, connected, then turned off. Hopefully this is normal. I am now building my Library.
Hope this keeps people from having to spend a whole day or longer just to turn on their Zune.

Actually, a little update. It didn't seem that my Zune was charging after I fixed the freezing problem. It would load up, and connect to my computer, but as soon as it connected the screen turned off. I thought maybe it was just because the battery was so low, so I left it connected while I went to class. When I came back, it was still doing the same thing. So I tried unplugging it and turning it on. It loaded up, but would quickly say the battery is low and shut off. Eventually, I was BACK to the charge freezing problem. So I gave up and called Customer Support for a repair request. I'd really like this Zune to work!

I'm about ready to chuck this POS out a window...
Mine has worked fine since Dec 25 07...now it faintly shows a song screen and in frozen. held down every combination of buttons, connected it to my PC which does not recognize it.
Guess I'll try the wait and see battery drain...too bad I can't just yank the batt and clod boot it.
Should have gotten that Nano...:001_9898: What a Pile. POS!

In my last post I was really sore because my Zune 8GB froze like a popcicle and thanks to the forums I got it going again by doing the battery drain, recharging it and then letting it update the software.
That said...in the course of screaming "POS!" all over the place, I asked our resident iPod expert, my 15 year old daughter! She told me to chill, it happens to her iPod(s) occassionally as well, "Yeah Dad, just let it drain and recharge it".
You'd think they'd mention that somewhere in the manuals!
OK, so, as long as it continues to behave, I won't chuck it out a window, yet!

Thanks Zuni, without Bill I would be out of work cause, to use an old DOS quote from 1985 "IBM on Apples". But you know MS they learn to master programs through user sufferings. I let my Z8G drian, recharged it, let it update itself and it's up again. The funny point is, my 15 year ols daughter (an avid iPod user) told me, "Chill Dad, iPods do that too, just let it die and recharge it." Who knew?

does the zune softwar come up when you plug it in

I had the frozen screen problem as well. My Zune is about a month old though so this is no initial thing. I had pluged my zune into the car charger while it was powered on, that's the only thing I can think of that may have coused it. The odd part about that is a song did start playin, it wasn't until I hit the back button that the thing locked up. I tried everything to get the damned thing to respoond, nothing worked. Then I tried holding the back button and the center button at the same time and this actually did work, it rebooted the Zune.
