The 'draining battery' trick works. But you must connect to a USB 2.0 port.
You cannot connect to a USB 1.0 port. The USB 1.0 port will cause the problem again. Unfortunately, Zune manual does not mention this and wasted me a lot of time.

Hi to all. The reason Im here is cuz I just bought a Brown Zune and I installed the software that came on the CD, everything went ok until the software asked me to connect my zune to the PC. Inmediatly after connecting it to the back of my PC the zune lighted up and a picture of a charger appeared.

It has been on since then and nothing I have tried works, no resetting, nothing until now. It was the first time I had connected this Zune. My computer doesnt recognizes it and thou I took out the USB cable it still has the same picture and it wont turn off. If anyone knows why is this or how to fix it please help!!

Have you tried shutting it down by holding the back button and the middle button down together?

Hi guys, just bought a Zune two days ago. Last night I tried syncing and I have the dreaded frozen charger screen problem as well.

Has ANYONE actually remedied this issue yet?

The Microsoft tech guy I spoke with infomed me that I have to wait until the battery is fully dead, then try charging for exactly 3 hours.

I am beginning the waiting game, but I find it disturbing that no one has found any real solutions to this problem.

I've read that it's related to the battery being unable to charge and this link was offered. Not sure if it will help:
