Wait, update, here's what it means:

Water intoxication, also known as hyponatremia, is extremely rare and only usually affects endurance athletes, such as long distance runners.

The condition is caused by a loss of sodium in the blood due to sweating and dilution by drinking large volumes of water. Typical symptoms include nausea, vomiting and headache. In the most serious cases the brain swells causing confusion, seizures, coma and even death.

Yeah, water intoxication is real and scary. Most often, you hear about it in athletes or dieters. The general rule of thumb for water intake is that you should not consume more than forty ounces in any given hour (and honestly, you shouldn't get that close to forty either). In her first hour there in the contest, she would have met the forty ounces.

This is just so sad and tragic.

It's not the holding that kills you, it's the intake. Too much water can lead to an imbalance of electrolytes in the blood stream and tanking blood pressure. IIRC, the electrolyte imbalance is what ends up killing you.

What is really sad is a caller called in to the radio show and warned them that this could happen, and they laughed and said they didn't care because she had signed a waiver.

drinking too much water must have decreased the sodium levels below the permissible levels. and thats when it becomes really bad as it can lead to death.

And the tape of the phone call is going to be key in the lawsuit. They can't claim ignorance and they can't claim privacy.
