Microsoft Sees No Immediate Return on Zune

Microsoft Corp. does not expect an immediate return on its outlay for its upcoming "Zune" media player, predicting a three- to five-year investment period for the new device.

"It is something that is going to take time," Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft's entertainment and devices division, said at Microsoft's annual analyst meeting.

"This is not a six-month investment time horizon," he said, adding that it may take three, four or five years to succeed.

Last week, Microsoft said it plans to release a new music and entertainment player and accompanying software under the "Zune" brand this year, in a belated attempt to challenge the dominance of Apple Computer Inc.'s iPod player.

I never expected a huge initial surge. First, people are always scared of 1st Gen MS products. LOL Second, lots of people have iPods that haven't broken yet.

Now that us brave folks have seen how awesome the Zune really is, all we gotta do is wait for the iPods to break. We'll all be able to say that we had Zune's before they were cool.

It's so weird to be bucking the establishment with a Microsoft product, isn't it? Haha, we're the first.

I'm just happy I have yet one more way to be anti-Apple. Apple would "own" the PC market if they weren't so greedy back in the late 80s and early 90s. As far as the Zune, I'm happy to have something to smack my IPod loving friends in the head with when I hear them say how cool their IPod is. My PalmT|X smokes an IPod (Nano at least) on just about every feature, but they haven't really caught on...poor marketing on Palm's part I guess.

Now finally their is a product that gives consumers a choice over the IPod hd model...I for one think the Zune ROCKS!!! I'm looking foward to the to-be-released features/upgrades.

I'm very glad to see healthy competition. If Apple were left alone, iPod prices would shoot through the roof. When I was in HS, you could get a decent portable CD player for $30-40. Inflation doesn't justify spending a $100 on a piece of crap that doesn't even let you choose what you want to listen to next.

This makes entirely no sense. In what way is Apple greedy, why would any company want to produce any products if the product is not going to occupy any market share? And greedy compared to whom, Microsoft? Isnt that pot calling the kettle black?

There ARE already a lot of competitors in the market, but most people chose iPod because they swear by Apple or because they are influenced by the rabid Apple fanboys. And having a Zune or not makes little or no difference at all to them.

Having competitors does not automatically equate to having healthy competition. MS isn't there yet with the Zune, but once they are, it will only be good for consumers.
