I see this is the place to be......0 posts in this forum. Well I guess I'll be the first.

When downloading music from the Marketplace is there anyway to adjust the compression on the songs/album. I'm not a big downloader most of my music is ripped from CD but I bought some points to try it out and the albums I bought were downloaded at 192kbs. Not the greatest sound in the world.

Anyway any help would be greatly appreciated.

Nope highest quality sadly. Just buy better headphones and the sound will get better.

Is it a pain to use the points? Most of my music is from CD or trade-able bootlegs.

The points system is pretty simple to use. I love it because I have a XBox 360 and can share the points between my Zune and my 360. You can buy points online at the marketplace or at most stores that sell 360s.

Do you have to use the points or can you just pay? I mean, the points would be cool for my kids so I could give them gift cards like I do for iTunes, but I am a grown up with my own credit cards. Getting points just seems like an extra step.

Good point...with any kind of compression, in other words lossy format, something will be lost. But I guess I'll just go with that whole "good enough" idea.

I thought I had read somewhere that ITunes downloads were 128kps...maybe that was Wal-Mart.com downloads...oh well, doesn't matter...I dont' download songs from either.

You're right, iTunes downloads are 128kps.

I read somewhere in the past (can't remember the source) that 128kbps is about FM quality, 160 kbs is near CD quality, and that 192kbs was better than CD quality sound.

Eeeeck, sorry, but that's not correct at all. Don't take this as a criticism, I know you're only relaying what you heard.

There's no mp3 codec that's better than CD quality. It doesn't get better with less information. Even 320kbps isn't CD quality, but pretty close. The closest compressed format is Lossless, which comes in many forms such as WMA Lossless. You don't get better than CD unless you move to something like SACD, or DVD audio.

I rip using WMA lossless which will convert to 320kbps when I transfer to the zune.

192kbps is generally considered the lowest quality that's still suitable for music. That's why itunes and zune use it, cause it's small, but good enough. I would love it if zune marketplace had the option to download in 320 or even lossless.
