Does anyone feel that Google is becoming more and more like MS? Another (evil?) monopoly in the making. So much for their motto..lol

I don't know about evil or monopoly. The are definitely getting huge, but they also embrace a lot of open technology, and they don't make people pay out unreasonable prices to use their software. They make their money elsewhere. Google is groundbreaking. Expect to see lots more in the future.

I think they're still at the acquiring market share stage by letting people use stuff for free. Im also looking forward to see a lot more from Google in the future.

Google Labs is awesome. Things like Gmail came out of Google Labs. They pay big bucks for programmers once they develop an idea out of the Labs. Google Talk is based on Jabber (or the protocol underlying Jabber), and they use a lot of other open source stuff. Software as a service is going to be the next big thing. Google Docs is another cool thing. I can see MS Office being obsoleted by Web 2.0 style software.

It seems that Microsoft is also slowly catching up on this OS business by offering their virtual machines for free.

Hmmm, pretty cool. Except it will only (of course) run Microsoft operating systems. Now if only something like VMWare would become free....

I don't think they are evil, they are just building an insane empire. One that has no competitors really and they are destroying everyone in their path. They are buying up assets just to get money out of their pockets. My only fear for them is that they may become so big that their internal operations become sluggish and their performance suffers (much like what happened to Microsoft). They just got so big that they can't process anything quickly anymore so they are always playing catchup.

I don't know if I agree with that. Google is buying up lots of companies, but I don't think that they are getting too big too fast. It's not like they are buying them up and incorporating them into Google services. It's just revenue. I think that soon you will see things like Google Docs becoming very popular, and soon Google will have competitors.

I'm not sure where Google is going. It's nice they are buying actual assets though. I can only imagine one day internet advertising (where 99% of the money and funding on the net comes from) will have a severe crash since companies dump money into what is almost worthless advertising (not all of it but it's becoming less and less popular) Either the business models of the advertisers is going to have to change or there will be a major burst in that market.
