I believe this problem started with an update with the software,

It was late so I went to bed and the next day the computer I was using shut off and the zune shut off. The computer had something wrong with its boot sector, and the zune wanted to clear all content. We finally got the computer fixed and I figured I could fix my zune by downloading the firmware update.

to make a long story short, computer works, Zune does not. I've tried resetting it

Its also saying that the Zune is using 27.73 GB when its cleared of all content

If anyone can help me with this, I'll be forever grateful

haha

thanks,
matt

I've gotten the same failure of memory in the last week or so.
Could have been a software update - with microsoft doing automatice updates it is hard to know.

I have a 30G Zune, 3.75G of music, 1.27G of videos, and memory was full at 30G.
Deleted most videos and still memory full.

Any fixes out there? Suggestions?
How can I get into the Zune and look at the stored files / data? - then delete them?

Thanks,
BevW

Has anyone found a fix for this zune memory problem? I've wore my fingers to the bone with erasing and re-formatting un-plugging, and letting the battery run out. I've even taken mine apart, unplugged everything I could, and left it sit for two weeks and then erased and re-formatted and I still get 27.73 full with nothing on it. All this has happened to mine since the 1st. when everybody froze up. I don't know what to do. HELP PLEASE.

Have you tried clearing the firmware by pressing and holding the back left and ok buttons?

I tried what you suggested, several times, but nothing at all happened, at least what I could tell, and if something did happen I still show 27.73G used with absolutely nothing loaded on it.
Being permanently disabled, and what measly bit of money I receive each month, it took me a while to save the money to buy my 30G Zune, and to have it being totally useless after only having for 13 months really upsets me because I can't go out and just buy a new one.
There has to be some way to fix this problem. Any other suggestions? I would be forever grateful to anyone who could turn my zune, from being a paperweight, back into what its supposed to be.

       Thank You

In the Zune software does it show that space as "Reserved Storage"?

It says 0% reserved space. I once again took it apart and left everything unplugged since my last entry here, until today Feb 08 2009, put it together and still get almost full memory. I can't even load 1 full CD before it reads memory full. Is there another battery deeper inside the unit that needs to completely drain? I don't know what to do. I know I really miss my zune!

When you pressed and held the back left and ok buttons did a screen appear that said "Clearing Contents this may take a few minutes"?

Yes it did. Screen 3 says please wait, and then screen 4 says clearing contents please wait, and then it goes to screen 1 that said to plug in my zune, and then to screen 2 which said to open up zune and install current firmware. It then says to leave it plugged in. It then shuts down and starts up a few times. Eventually it stays on and connects to my zune and the memory bar shows 97.73G used. I even went to my settings and clicked on the erase contents button and my zune even says erasing. When finished it still changes nothing in memory. I then try to load a CD on it, and it says not enough memory on device.

Sorry for the inconvenience. I would recommend calling Zune customer support at 1-877-GET-ZUNE and see if they can send you a replacement or send it in for repair.
